Sky Mavis - Our Next Chapter
The Journey So Far…
Sometimes you’re so early to a market that you feel like you’re building for yourself and a few close friends. When Axie was born 5 years ago, almost nobody cared or understood what an NFT was. Things are different now.
In 2018 we set forth on a journey that would change gaming forever. From humble beginnings with our community in Axie (and CryptoKitty) Discord, we asked questions and deployed experiments that would create a totally new genre of blockchain-powered games. We believe these games, have the promise to introduce and onboard the legions of gamers worldwide to blockchain technology. Our secret is to create immersive experiences that are relatable and nostalgic at first glance, while introducing novel surface area for game design and incentive coordination under the hood.
So far we’ve experienced the joy and glory of exponential adoption while also weathering the harsh bite of crypto winter.
Along the way, we’ve enjoyed numerous wins, developed considerable scar tissue, and learned a lot about ourselves. It’s with these lessons in mind, that we’ve continued to refine who we are, the inevitable future that we’re spearheading, and what values we hold dear.
Today, we’re delighted to unveil a fresh look as well as our mission, vision, and values:
First, let’s talk about the new visual identity. Today we’ve introduced a brand new Sky Mavis bird and logo. A new look for the next stage of our journey.
Did you know that Sky Mavis was named after a Mystic bird axie body part of the same name? The Bird’s sharp beak represents our commitment to extreme focus and digging into the details. The beautiful Mystic eyes represent the birds eye view we have from the top and our uncanny ability to predict the future by creating it
A mission and vision serve as North stars for our team members as they go about their work. What is the future that we’re looking to create and how are we going to get there?
To create economic freedom for everyone, starting with gamers.
Economic freedom is about the right to own your money, your data, and your digital identity. In an increasingly digital world, we need to make sure that we have the right to transact and own things on the internet. We believe that gaming is the perfect trojan horse for ensuring that web3 adoption acts as a shield for our digital rights and freedoms. Half of the world are gamers, gamers are already familiar with digital currencies, and games have traditionally spearheaded the adoption of novel technologies.
We are building a future where blockchain technology is seamlessly integrated into everyday life.
We dream of a integrated ecosystem where billions of people:
Wake up and play blockchain games with their friends
Buy & sell NFTs (game items, art, real estate, + more) on our marketplace
Trade/learn financial literacy through applications like Katana
Bank and pay for their daily needs using their digital wallet
Earn ownership through contributions to their favorite projects
Headquartered in Asia, we have seen how companies like Kakao, Naver, and WeChat have used their dominance in the chat market to expand into payments, stickers, gaming, and even taxis. Our thesis is that gaming is the future of social aggregation, not chat. This means that if we can aggregate enough gamers, we can use this social traction to drive adoption of our preferred payment and transaction technology: blockchain.
Values have trade-offs. Building a successful startup requires optimizing consciously for certain values and dealing with the weaknesses they might create. For example, our value of iteration means that some of our products might not be fully polished or complete at launch. It’s a conscious sacrifice we make in the name of rapid testing and experimentation. Values serve as a framework for modeling behavior for our team members and provide a way to evaluate strengths and opportunities for improvement.
With this in mind, let’s dig into Sky Mavis’s values and their whys.
We deliver results and take accountability for our actions. When we make mistakes, we fix them.
We’re no strangers to mistakes. Over 5 years building at the frontier we’ve made plenty of them. When we mess up, we measure the impact and clean up the mess. If we say we’re going to do something, we do it. If we can’t, we communicate pro-actively and accept the consequences.
We prioritize fast iteration, calculated experimentation, and synthesizing things in novel combinations.
There’s no playbook for web3 gaming. We’re building the ship while sailing a stormy sea. This is our preferred state. It also means that we need to be lean and agile in the way we build. We ship constantly, relentlessly and use kaizen to continuously improve on the things that work.
We’re battle-hardened and anti-fragile. We are both planners and executors. We attack each day and dig into the details.
Sleepless nights and relentless product launches molded us— there were many of these before we saw a glimmer of success. We know that in order to win, a deep dedication, bordering on obsession, is needed. We’ve been broke in the bear market before— you can never count us out.
We give users real stake in our products. We take ownership of our work and collaborate with diverse stakeholders to maximize its impact.
Ownership is core to web3. It’s how we align incentives and coordinate win-win behaviors. It’s also a way of being. Ownership in the workplace means that we take full responsibility for projects that we take on from planning to execution.
We’re looking for builders, thinkers, and dreamers to join us on our quest.
It’ll be a long and difficult journey. Dark. Cold.
But if we're successful, eternal glory and recognition await those who walk the road with us.
